In an exclusive, wide-ranging interview set to air tomorrow with NBC News anchor Brian Williams, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden explains the role he played as a systems expert and contractor for the Defense Intelligence Agency, CIA, and NSA, and reflects on the global impact of his high-profile revelations.
Snowden also dismisses his critics who say he was merely a low-level hacker. “I was trained as a spy in sort of the traditional sense of the word, in that I lived and worked undercover overseas– pretending to work in a job that I’m not–and even being assigned a name that was not mine.” Snowden’s interview with NBC is his first with a U.S. news organization; an effort Williams said took “months” to prepare.
As Snowden remains in Russia under temporary asylum, one of the more intriguing questions is what will he will do next. Moscow has said that they will extend his document indefinitely, so long as he remains inside the country. But if he decided to return to the United States, would he have a fair shot at defending any charges of espionage against him?
Investigative reporter Glenn Greenwald says, flatly, no. In an appearance at the Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, Greenwald, author of “No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State,” argues that the United States government is making an example of Chelsea Manning (formerly PFC Bradley Manning) and Snowden to scare future whistleblowers.
